The main objective of the SANS/ISO 39001 Road Traffic Safety (RTS) management system standard is the elimination or minimisation of fatalities and serious injuries on our road networks.
Globally, road crashes result in approximately 1.3 million fatalities annually and in South Africa the figure is approximately 14000. In order to positively impact this sombre reality, will require the concerted efforts and collaboration of all stakeholders associated with the road network and road transport. It is not the responsibility of any single entity (whether government or the private sector) to solve the problems on our road networks, nor is it possible for a single entity to achieve meaningful results. Similarly, it is not possible for any single initiative to offer a “silver bullet” solution; rather it will require numerous initiatives and tools that will collectively and progressively have a positive effect on road safety.
The ISO 39001 standard represents one such tool that provides an international best-practice framework for identifying and managing road safety risks. This introduction to ISO 39001 will facilitate an interpretation of the standard in a practical manner so that the various road traffic stakeholders will understand what is required for implementation in the context of the different environments.
